Late-Feb slog

The kids had a visit from their Granny this week (her choice in nicknames), and she brought her dog to visit with ours. Pet-cousins? Not a lot else pops out from this week - one sick kid, another starting select basketball, and the third gearing up for dance competitions and tutoring in her writing. Normal bedlam. My wife and I managed to sneak in a much-needed date night over the long weekend, killing a bottle of wine at Driftwood Estate Winery. They’ve got a nice setup, with spots to drink looking out over the countryside, and the wine we had was great.

Writing Updates

I had big updates last week, showing the first prints of Book 4 and some new art. Week-older-me can’t compete.

Reminder—if you want to join in on beta reading of Book 4, the link was in last week’s newsletter (old newsletters are linked at the bottom).

Minor Spoiler Alert - you’ll get hints of Book 4 from the images below. Delete now if you don’t like hints.

Map of Baenath in its surroundings

I sketched a couple of pics of the town of Baenath on FreeWorld. I have an artist converting my scribbles into a map—something my previous books lacked. Does Grendelmar need a map? Forsaken? Nautical? Orbanos? Central Park? 😀

I thought it would be fun to show what the artist does to turn my chicken-scratches into something magical. I’m working with a new artist on this one, but I’m optimistic—I like the way he communicates. I don’t have permission yet to share his intermediate drawings, but I’ve asked. Oh, he agreed! His first pass of the city layout is below.

o To-Do list for writing last week:

  • Email updates
  • Grammatical and Style edits for Book 4 - through chapter 14. Yellow, because I only completed through chapter 8. I can’t keep the same pace as I managed for Book 3–work is too busy.
  • Sketch out or describe pics for Book 4. Didn’t do it. Took a stab at drawing Baenath and Artifice tower, but it isn’t what I want them to draw yet.

o To-Do list for writing this week:

  • Email updates
  • Grammatical and Style edits for Book 4 - through chapter 15.
  • list out the pics I want and decide whether they are truly achievable.

Middle daughter napping with dog in my office

A week-and-a-half after retirement, my buddy sent a pic from the gym room at work, asking where I was. My first thought was, "Why are they in the office on a Saturday?" It was Thursday. That shows where my head is. 🙃 I haven't hit a home run in my job search, nor has anything knocked my socks off. I had an opportunity that appealed to me more than others, working at a startup called Tenstorrent. Though I didn't get the job, I realized through the process that I really like the idea of a...

I would like to lock down my blurb so that I can send it to the cover editor. I took input from April, then made more edits. I’m open to suggestions. Also pretty happy with it. The Mother of Trees withers while the trolls prepare to conquer a crumbling world. The elves’ only hope rests on a desperate plan forged by a fanatical Warder with questionable motives. Elliah, a magicless elf cursed by prophecy, holds the key to either salvation or destruction. Forced into an uneasy alliance with the...
