Newsletter - July 26, 2022

The highlights of the week include visiting my father-in-law's ranch down in Mission, TX, and visiting the Museum of South Texas History. I don't know that I'm a history buff... the facts and details escape my mind too quickly to form the web of information that I see real historians spin. But my forgetfulness gives me the chance to enjoy "new" information repeatedly, so there's that.

Mid-lights (I made that up) would be the fires I spotted on the drive, and the one across the street from our house (along a retention pond called Bear Lake... renamed Lake BoogerSnot by me and my kids)--they all got put out, but sheesh, it is just too hot and dry in Texas this year.

The lowlights were really quite low, and won't be shared via newsletter. For those of you who believe that prayer affects change, we could use some.

I finally have a hardcover collection of my books. They still aren't perfect. The fonts on the spines have inconsistent sizes, and the title pages have different spacings. Even the front covers are a little inconsistent, due to slight differences in the formatting requirements for the hardbacks versus paperbacks. But I'm also hitting the point of diminishing returns on trying to get the differences fixed--probably past the point.

We're creeping up on a book signing event at the SudsMonkey brewery: https://bkgreenwood.com/books-and-brews/. I sent out a note to some folks at work, spilling the beans to my work crew that I write fantasy. Hopefully some will show up.

For financial reasons, I gutted all my advertising last week. It was hard to say it was doing any good, though it did get me web traffic, and now I have none. I suppose the web site and newsletter are the next on the list. Yes, there's freebie versions of newsletter services, but I have momentum with my current service and the energy to change is scarce.

I finally have my first couple of Audible reviews... one in USA and one in UK. It was a fun learning experience, but an expensive one. The time-hopping in book 1 is pretty hard to follow when just listening to the book--I'll have to keep that in mind in future books.

I didn't do great on my writing last week, but I took a couple of chunks of time to get in some reading time, and I used the long car ride to the valley to listen to another book. (Actually, I had a multi-hour work call on the way down to the valley, but I found some book-listening time on the return trip). I'm currently listening to this (click on the picture for a link):

and reading this:

I wish I had more time to devote to reading. But 'tis not the season.

o To-Do list for writing last week:

  • Email updates
  • Plug away at Book 1 of Thaumatropic Roots - didn't do great last week. I give myself a C.

Middle daughter napping with dog in my office

A week-and-a-half after retirement, my buddy sent a pic from the gym room at work, asking where I was. My first thought was, "Why are they in the office on a Saturday?" It was Thursday. That shows where my head is. 🙃 I haven't hit a home run in my job search, nor has anything knocked my socks off. I had an opportunity that appealed to me more than others, working at a startup called Tenstorrent. Though I didn't get the job, I realized through the process that I really like the idea of a...

I would like to lock down my blurb so that I can send it to the cover editor. I took input from April, then made more edits. I’m open to suggestions. Also pretty happy with it. The Mother of Trees withers while the trolls prepare to conquer a crumbling world. The elves’ only hope rests on a desperate plan forged by a fanatical Warder with questionable motives. Elliah, a magicless elf cursed by prophecy, holds the key to either salvation or destruction. Forced into an uneasy alliance with the...
